Primary Phase

Essentials

Under achievement is a key issue in education at present, right across the age range and curriculum areas. Ensuring children can read, write and are numerate (read more here for Numeracy in Motion) is essential to successful progress.

Many children who are underachieving have developmental delay, retained infant reflexes and a number of the characteristics shown below;

  • Floppy and poor muscle tone
  • Posture and control of the head is poor
  • Visual and listening skills are poorly developed
  • Is disorganized and does not follow instructions
  • Literacy and numeracy skills are falling behind the peer group
  • Attention span is erratic and is fidgety and overactive
  • Lacks effort and avoids work
  • Isolated and struggles with relationships
  • Is unhappy and is FAILING!

A solid foundation of  Fundamental Movement skills (see STABILITY, LOCOMOTION, MANIPULATION) is needed not only to learn but to enjoy play, physical education and sporting opportunities.

What We Do

Physfun gives staff and parents the tools to ensure their children develop all the above skills.
Using the best from tried and tested activities we show staff how to integrate movement fundamentals into PE lessons and After School Clubs. Create individual programmes for Teaching Assistants to use in class with selected children on a regular basis. The simple framework shown below can be used throughout the year in a differentiated and progressive way to constantly challenge and motive children to improve their skills and fitness levels.
