Key milestones

Some of the crucial gross motor skill development milestones in this stage include:

Lifting the head   Moving the head side to side
Rolling the body between 8- 10 weeks Creeping on the stomach between 6-9 months
Crawling between 7-12 months Walking 12 months
Pedals a tricycle 18 months Running 19 months
Jumps upwards 27 months  Goes upstairs 36 months
Throws overhead 48 months Hops & skips 60 months

It is this sort of movement that is vital to ‘wiring up the brain’!

Although children develop at different rates and they are all individual in their characteristics, those who may not be putting into place secure foundations will struggle to learn.
Difficulties may be evidenced by a number of problems e.g.

-    when general posture and head control is poor’
-    there is low attention span’
-    visual and listening skills are not good’
-    behavior is overactive with often an inability to follow instructions’

A child like this is likely to be unhappy and in relation to his/her peers may well be FAILING!
